Breath of the Wild Sequel: Top 5 Fan Theories

by | Jun 25, 2019 | Breath of the Wild 2

We learned at E3 2019 that The Legend of Zelda will be getting a new family member added to the ever expanding franchise. Best of all, this new game will be reusing some of Breath of the Wild’s assets, as well as its engine and overall world. If you haven’t seen the announcement trailer for the Breath of the Wild Sequel, I have you covered. Happy watching!

First Look | Breath of the Wild

Now then, since you are now awestruck by that detail packed trailer, let me hit you with an epic TOP 5. This is the top 5 fan theories for breath of the wild’s sequel! Enjoy…

1. Ganondorf Got Ugly

The first theory is actually the closest thing to a fact in this list. A fact? Where’s the evidence? Well, in the trailer above you may have noticed that an artist went to town on some of the cave walls. Don’t feel bad if you missed it (I did too the first time).

But that’s just one example, here’s another. When you look at that lifeless mummy on the table, you might notice some schwanky jewelry. For your viewing pleasure:

The necklace (I think it’s a necklace) has the Gerudo Symbol on it. If you’re new to The Legend of Zelda (I hope you are super young, otherwise, HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK???) you might not know what the gerudo are and what it has to do with this here mummy. Let me explain. Ganondorf is the Gerudo King of Thieves, a race of only females where a king (a male) is only born once every 100 years. Also, his head piece is the same head piece he always wears… so, yeah it’s Ganondorf Dragmire (maybe…)! What ever the case maybe this mummy seems to play a central role in Breath of the Wild 2’s story.

A kid like you may not know this, but the Gerudo race consists only of women. Only one man is born every hundred years…

2. A Beast Slumbers in the Castle

The second popular theory is that Hyrule Castle is actually a divine beast! Now this idea comes from the fact that we see the castle rise up near the end of the trailer (picture below). This is an intriguing theory because it raises some interesting questions. Will it be the end location? Will we have to enter the castle early game? What happens when we beat the boss of the castle? Is it Ganondorf himself or will beating what is thought to be the final boss actually be the entry to a bigger boss (think twilight princess)? Will this divine beast resemble another animal? All very pertinent questions.

That leads us very nicely to our third theory…

3. Beam me up Scotty

This theory states that perhaps the castle is a teleportation point, a place where Hyrule and an alternate reality meet (could this be unlocked after beating the boss of the castle divine beast?). Maybe like Lorule or Termina or even the Twilight Realm (could this introduce Midna?). Lorule is a parallel dimension, actually its the exact opposite of Hyrule but with the same basic geography. Meaning it is a much darker world than Hyrule, and sort of follows the theme set up in the trailer, which has a darker feel than it’s predecessor. Terminal is also a darker, eerier world sometimes referred to as a parallel dimension but also as the imagination of the skull kid… but that’s for another article. The one that interests me however is the Twilight Realm.

4. The Land of Twilight & Zant

There are many details in the trailer that could point to the Twilight Realm being included in this sequel. For starters, the green energy and lettering look a lot like the energy and lettering from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Also the hand that restrains the mummy in the trailer resembles Midna’s hand/helmet thing (maybe this hints at her return). I know that’s not much to go off of but a Reddit user that goes by RetroFunk (they will be referred to as Retro from now on) posted a very in-depth theory that has some pretty interesting points in it.

Zant | Twilight Princess

Retro points out that if you reverse the song in the Breath of the Wild Sequel trailer, three of the notes are the exact same as Zant’s theme song. Zant’s theme song only has three notes so Retro believes that the song has been expanded and possibly reworked for this game. Retro also researched where all versions of Ganondorf had died to find out which version of Ganondorf would be in this game, however none of them died like what is shown in the trailer.

“In trying to figure out which Ganondorf remains the corpse was supposed to be I cross referenced the position all other Ganondorfs die in and none of them die like that. You know who does do that though? ZANT. He does that EXACT pose a LOT.”

RetroFunk

This means that the mummy corpse may not be Ganondorf at all. Retro continues to reinforce his theory with some really cool details, definitely give it a look HERE! I personally like this theory a lot, just… if you were wondering.

5. Zelda’s Big Break

The final theory is a really interesting one! In the opening scenes of the trailer, you may notice that princess Zelda got a new hairstyle. This means that Hyrule post Calamity Ganon has a new royal hairstylist. But on top of that, this means that with no, long, distracting hair in the way, Princess Zelda can finally become a playable character! What would this look like? Would she be able to possess the Master Sword instead of Link?

Remember that in Breath of the Wild, Zelda wanted to become the Hylian Champion instead of a locked up princess. Could this be her big break? In the trailer, you may also notice that Zelda is trapped with the mummy. This could be the turning point in the game. You could get an option to keep playing as Link or switch over to Zelda.

Another possible way this theory could come to fruition is through a co-op mode. Grab a friend and another switch and play together. In a co-op mode how would the master sword work? It would most likely go to Link. So what about Zelda? Well, I think that she would probably get her own special set of weapons, some kind of melee weapon, maybe the Bow of Light, and a Royal Shield. Will Zelda have special abilities? What do you think? Let us know below!
